Magnetotactic bacteria are unique iron biomineralizing organisms that use the Earth’s magnetic field for navigation across chemical gradients. Their fossil reminders are widespread in sedimentary archives and serve as environmental tracers with unique sensitivity to redox gradients. Furthermore, magnetofossils contribute to continuous records of the Earth’s magnetic field in magnetofossil-rich sediments. We bring together scientists from different disciplines dealing with magnetotactic bacteria and magnetofossils, including biology, physiology, biomineralization, magnetotaxis, environmental sensitivity, detection of magnetofossils in sediments, and use of magnetofossil records as environmental proxies.
