Welcome to your January Update for the 2026 EGU General Assembly, to be held 3–8 May 2026, both on-site in Vienna, Austria, and virtually. To keep you up to date, we will be sending you important EGU26 information 'EGU26 Updates' at least once per month - at the beginning of the month. You will still receive direct emails when tasks have a specific deadline, so make sure you check your email settings so that you don’t miss anything!
More information about the planned format and additional features of the EGU26 General Assembly will be available soon, but for now let us kick off the EGU26 Monthly Updates with the important information you need to know about in January!
So, what do you need to do in January?
For conveners
- The call for abstracts is closing soon, so it is time to advertise your session! The abstract submission deadline is 15 January 2026, 13:00 CET.
- If you would like to have a solicited speaker in your session, make sure you check the conditions that apply before approaching them.
- Late abstracts must be uploaded by conveners on behalf of authors by 22 January 2026, 13:00 CET.
- Session organization of 'SOI - Abstract implementation' must be completed by 28 January 2026, and 'SOII - Session tagging' must be completed by 29 January 2026. Please discuss session merging and abstract transfer with your Programme Group Chair as early as possible to allow time for discussion between conveners.
- Need to apply for financial support to attend EGU26 because of caregiving responsibilities, disability, career status, or other barriers to inclusion? Apply for our EDI participation support grant by 20 February 2026, 23:59 CET.
- If you are a convener of a US/GDB session, it is time to prepare your panel (speakers, questions to be addressed, timing) and start the invitations for your solicited speakers. Guidelines can be found here.
- Have a question about being a session convener, running a Union Symposium (US) or Great Debate (GDB), or holding a Short Course (SC)? Find the answers on the EGU26 website! You can also find out about specific types of sessions including the Inter- and Transdisciplinary sessions (ITS) and the Education and Outreach sessions (EOS).
- Registration is now open for EGU26, and our volunteer Council voted to not increase any of the costs to attend the General Assembly, so the mandatory Abstract Processing Charges (APC), the rates for the various registration options, and EGU membership are staying the same as in 2025. Apply for early bird rates by 1 April 2026, 13:00 CEST.
- Need a letter of invitation for a visa application? Find out the ways we can and cannot help with your application, and request your letter of invitation here.
- Support your colleagues at the General Assembly - the EGU26 Peer Support programme is now open for experienced attendees. Submit your name to take part by 31 March 2026!
- Apply for a Townhall meeting at EGU26 by 21 January 2026!
- Take the opportunity to connect on a specific topic by applying for a Splinter Meeting! Commercial Splinter Meetings are available from 21 January.
- Prepare your calendar with all the EGU26 important dates by checking our Deadlines and Milestones page.
